Treating Varicose Veins with Acupuncture

When the veins in your lower leg swell, widen, enlarge, or extend, you may have a condition, known as varicose veins. Within this condition, the veins underneath the skin become highly visible and may vary in color from pink, red, purple, blue or black lines.

Clotting may also occur. The cause of such distended veins is when the valves do not work properly and the blood does not flow freely.

For those with severe cases, the veins may look like earthworms. Some of the symptoms of varicose veins include skin changes, damage, sclerosis, heaviness, weakness, fatigue and leg pain.

Being overweight increases the odds of varicose veins forming.

Although most people think surgery is the only treatment for varicose veins, acupuncture is quite effective for this condition.

Chinese medical theory believes varicose veins are the result of stagnant blood that can be produced by many underlying factors.

With this condition an abnormal blood flow occurs, so by treating key acupuncture points and or bleeding the veins, it forces the blood to circulate through the veins and the areas around them.

When being treated for this condition by a Chinese Medicine practitioner, you may feel tingling or even itchiness once the blood begins to flow again.

The blood will be unable to circulate until any stagnant blood in the vessels is completely removed.

The improvement that results from treating varicose veins with acupuncture is gradual.

Depending on how severe your case is, you may need several treatments to eliminate your varicose veins symptoms. Acupuncture aids in the vein restoration process, but you can soak in a hot bathtub or other warm environment in order to aid in speeding the process.

Surgical procedures do not always cure the problem, and sometimes may even make it worse.

Most people just choose to live with the condition instead of attempting to correct it. The downfall to leaving this condition untreated is that the pain and swelling may increase over time.

Many people with this ailment try many other kinds of chemical or medical intervention, traditional or alternative, until they potentially realize nothing else works.

It is encouraged that you do your best to stay on top of and regularly treat your varicose veins condition. This may prevent the veins from manifesting into something more serious.
