Superfoods have become the talk of the town. Everyone wants to know what superfoods are and how they help improve your health. Since we are in the information age, what better way to keep up with the times than to know what’s hot and what’s not.
Staying on top of the latest news and nutritional content will help educate you on what is healthy for you. I love to help in that area, so let’s go….
What exactly is a superfood?
You could ask ten different people this question and get 10 different answers. Many health professionals have a slightly different take!
For our definition, let’s stick with the dictionary which says, superfoods are highly nutrient-rich foods considered to be especially beneficial for health and well-being.
Examples of superfoods
The first one that comes to mind is salmon. Salmon is a very nutritious food as it contains omega 3 fatty acids, an abundance of protein, vitamins B2, A and D and many other essential nutrients. On top of that, it contains fatty acids, which can reduce cholesterol and protect the heart.
Since there is no strict definition of a superfood, anything that is rich in antioxidants is considered worthy of the title. Other examples of superfoods that quickly come to mind are blueberries, leafy greens, eggs, beans, oats, nuts and seeds and all sea food.
Remember, superfoods contain or are made out of natural, pure ingredients. This means that they are not subject to stringent processing methods such as heating, roasting or adding artificial flavors and colors.
Superfoods aid nutrition and so much more
When you eat a healthy well balanced diet, you get healthier! Eat lots of fruits, vegetables, seafood, poultry, legumes, nuts, seeds. The nutrients found in these foods will add to your overall nutrition. You will also get all the vitamins and nutrients your body needs without adding unnecessary junk.
Do superfoods work like magic to create an instant healthy lifestyle? Not exactly, but these foods do play a big role in your weight loss goals. The foods that are high in antioxidants act as appetite suppressants.
This means you eat fewer meals and feel less hungry throughout the day. For those who want to lose weight, this is a plus because skipping meals leads to irregular eating patterns and contributes to weight gain.
Women love these examples of superfoods
The most popular superfoods women eat are blueberries and blackberries. They have been shown to have high amounts of antioxidant vitamins like vitamins A, C and E. Berries have also been found to contain high levels of polyphenols, which are highly beneficial nutrients for maintaining health and wellness.
Some of the most popular superfoods for men include zinc and selenium, both of which are also high in antioxidant vitamins. Fact of the day – selenium has been found to be more beneficial than zinc!
Benefits of Superfoods
One great benefit of maintaining a high level of antioxidants is that you might shed a few pounds. Aside from weight loss benefits, eating healthy and getting enough nutrients can also prevent other diseases and health problems. For instance, it’s well known that regular consumption of fruits and vegetables can lower the risk of prostate cancer.
This is primarily due to the fact that fruits and vegetables contain high amounts of antioxidants that fight free radicals that can cause disease as well as inflammation.
So what are the best superfoods?
The answer depends on how you plan to add them to your diet. Since some people aren’t very consistent with their intake, it can be a good idea to take a supplement that has the benefits of several of these foods as well as other nutrients to ensure a well-balanced diet.
The most popular and nutritious superfoods for both men and women are blueberries and kale. As blueberries have plenty of antioxidants, they can help in fighting cancer, aging, and heart disease. They also provide essential vitamins and minerals necessary for overall health.
On the other hand, kale contains rich sources of chlorophyll, iron, magnesium, and selenium, among others. These nutrients combined with the benefits of the powerful antioxidants found in blueberries and kale can keep your body healthy and strong.
